First exhibition at Istanbul’s Islands Museum

One of Istanbul’s first city museums on the Princes’ Islands is drawing praise from locals for its first exhibition, which reflects the history and culture of the islands themselves.

The museum’s general approach, materials intended for collection and the location of the museum, which will document the social history of the Istanbul islands, are now on display for local islanders through an introductory exhibition called “Towards the Islands Museum.:

Short surveys will be conducted with visitors during the exhibition, which runs from Aug. 8 until Sept. 12 in Büyükada’s Port Square.

Local people will be asked to support the project by donating documents and objects to be used in temporary and permanent exhibitions at the museum, which is being organized on the theme “This is our story” and "Don’t let memories vanish, share them with the future.”

The Islands Museum project is being carried out as part of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture through the joint efforts of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the Islands Municipality, the Islands District Governor’s Office and the Foundation of Islands. Presentations will also take place in the port squares of Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kınalıada to publicize the exhibition on Büyükada as the first important step of the museum project.
